The Position

At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives. We are courageous in both decision and action; we believe that good business means a better world.

Behind every presentation of each product sold by Roche is the involvement of Pharma Global Technical Operations (PT). Starting with Phase I of the development process and continuing through to product maturity, PT makes medicines at sites worldwide and includes more than 10 000 employees worldwide.

In "Global Technical Development" (PTD), we actively collaborate and develop creative technical solutions to efficiently transform scientific ideas into products. Our mission is to reliably deliver the pipeline and supply quality products to patients. The group excels in its work through innovation, teamwork, dedication, and mutual respect and contributes every day, continuously improving what it does.

Synthetic Molecules Technical Development (PTDC) is responsible for the technical development of synthetic pipeline molecules and the manufacture of Drug Substances and Drug Products for clinical studies. PTDC brings a broad range of experience across Drug Substance and Drug Product and analytical sciences and collaborates closely with key partners in Research and Early Development (pRED / gRED) and our synthetic molecules commercial manufacturing network.

As a Postdoctoral Scientist focusing on mechanism investigations and their translation into models, you are part of Small Molecule Pharma Technical Development. In your role, you will support our department by quickly developing mechanisms of chemical transformations and methods to make decisions from these. In particular, you will develop mathematical models for chemical processes. You will support this work with insights gained from analyzing process data. Your work will deliver an integrated toolbox of project evaluation, lab procedures, data generation, and data analysis to make kinetic modeling routinely accessible for all projects in Process Chemistry. With your expertise in physical organic chemistry, you will contribute to developing a large number of chemical processes in our portfolio by improving the understanding of their reaction mechanisms and mitigating scale-up risks.

Your responsibilities:
  • Developing mechanistic and empirical models for chemical unit operations, such as reaction kinetic models, as well as models for mixing and separation operations.

  • Develop industrial-relevant methodologies for quick mechanism elucidation and accompanying workflows.

  • Refine conceptual models to assess the value and applicability of kinetic modeling to development projects.

  • Mining, sorting and analyzing reaction mechanisms from company/scientific databases and systems to drive optimization and improvement of product development and scale-up.

  • Develop "simplified" user interfaces for generalist applications for various unit operations, emphasizing kinetic modeling.

  • Potentially developing or programming data analysis software tools and components and their continuous expansion and improvement. In particular, to provide an automated analysis pipeline.

  • Networking with other process modelers and data scientists at national and international Roche locations and external partners.

What you bring to the table:

You have experience in physical organic chemistry and kinetic modeling. You have used various modeling techniques and a drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques. Furthermore, you can drive business results with your data-based insights. You are comfortable working with a wide range of partners and functional teams and have a real passion for discovering solutions hidden in experimental data sets and working with partners to improve business outcomes. Likewise, you have a strong passion for process development and data science and, therefore, interest in working for an organization that values your talent, your proactive working style, and your passion for trying new ideas. You have strong conceptual thinking skills and are comfortable working at the detailed project level and abstracting the learnings into general workflows.

In addition, you bring the following qualification:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering / Process Engineering / Technical Chemistry or a related field (defended no more than 3 years ago);

  • Knowledge of chemistry and chemical processes, with a particular skill in elucidating reaction mechanisms; experience with multiphase systems, mixing, etc., is a plus.

  • Proven experience in the field of kinetic/process modeling and data science in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry. Ideally, you have experience with modeling with one or more tools such as gPROMS/gWAP, Dynochem, Matlab;

  • Experience in using a variety of data analysis tools, integrating data from different sources, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms, and creating/running simulations is a plus;

  • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data visualization software like Spotfire, Tableau, or similar and programming knowledge in either R/R-Shiny, Python, Matlab, and/or JavaScript is a plus;

  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with software such as COMSOL or M-Star is a plus;

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate closely with the business;

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English; German is a plus.

The planned start date of this postdoc position is March 2023, or upon availability.

Have we piqued your interest? Then we look forward to receiving your application! Please include a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and references in your application. Please clearly indicate your preferred start date in your motivation letter.
